The United States is experiencing rapid population aging, which is reshaping regional labor markets, healthcare demands, consumer spending patterns, housing needs, and public services. Economic Development Districts (EDDs) can play a critical role in addressing these challenges and enabling older adults to age in place. This report explores the various regional impacts of population aging, as well as the roles that EDDs can and have filled to ensure people and economies are able to thrive.

The North Central Regional Food Business Center is led by NADO member and Economic Development District (EDD), Region Five Development Commission (R5DC). In Summer 2023, at the request of R5DC, Melissa Levy, NADO’s regional development researcher and wealth creation specialist, offered wealth creation training in three states: Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Region Five had engaged 35 key partners throughout the three states, including all EDDs.
