Economic Development Director

The City of Roanoke operates under the traditional Mayor-Council form of government where the five-member Council, elected Mayor, and appointed City Manager operate the City. The Economic Development Director is under the general supervision of the City Manager and will be expected to maintain the City’s economic development objectives, continuing to work with the business community as an integral partner, and by being a tireless advocate for stable economic growth. The Economic Development Budget is approximately $3 million and includes funding for 8 Economic Development employees, including the Director. Roanoke prides itself on citizen involvement, innovation and efficient use of municipal resources.

Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree with major course work in economics, business, or a related field. A Master’s degree and a CEcD certificate is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have ten (10) or more years of economic development experience as well as five (5) or more years of supervisory experience. Ideally applicants will have executive level and managerial experience in a comparably sized public or private organization. Relocation to Roanoke is expected as well as a commitment to the City and the Community.

The hiring salary range is $95,000 to $115,000 and is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits will be offered to the successful candidate and there will be a choice of defined contribution retirement and benefit plans. While considering the salary range please keep in mind that the cost of living is significantly lower in the Roanoke Valley region than in many metropolitan areas of the country.
