Description

EAGLE COUNTY, COLORADO (population: 55,731) Eagle County was created by the Colorado legislature on February 11, 1883 from portions of Summit County. It was named after the Eagle River, which runs through the county. The county seat was originally set in Red Cliff but was moved to the town of Eagle in 1921.

Eagle County is located on the western slope of the state, approximately 90 miles west of Denver and 100 miles east of Grand Junction via Interstate 70 and is ranked as one of the best places to live.  Set in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the majority of Eagle County’s residents live along the I-70 corridor in the Eagle River Valley, with an additional population center located in the Roaring Fork Valley in the southwest corner of the county where it converges with two other counties.  While Eagle County is considered rural based upon population size, it is the 14th most populous of Colorado’s 64 counties.

The economy in Eagle County continues to be dominated by the ski industry, real estate, and other tourism-related businesses. Vail and Beaver Creek ski areas, operated by Vail Resorts, are two of the most popular winter destination ski resorts in the U.S.  In addition to world-class skiing and snowboarding at Vail and Beaver Creek, tourists visiting the county’s scenic, historical and summer recreational areas make a significant contribution to the county’s economy.  Summer recreational activities in the county include rafting, kayaking, paddle boarding, horseback riding, camping, ghost town exploration, backpacking, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and tennis. In addition, fishing and big game hunting.

The Community Development Department consists of 3 divisions: Building Inspection, Planning and Code Enforcement, with a total of 16 full-time employees including a Planning Manager and Chief Building Official which report directly to the Director. While the department’s main focus is on the fundamentals of the 3 divisions, they also spend time working on the County’s Comprehensive Plan, Land Use Regulations Updates/Rewrites and Vista.
