2023 NADO & DDAA Washington Conference Update
The National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) and the Development District Association of Appalachia (DDAA) Washington Conference will be held from March 12-15, 2023 in Arlington, VA. Click here to learn more and to register. The hotel room block at the conference hotel, the Crystal Gateway Marriott, for the 2023 NADO & DDAA Washington Conference is full.

If you do not have a room but need one, please contact Brittany Salazar (bsalazar@nado.org)If you have reserved a room(s) that you will not need, please do not cancel your reservation directly with the hotel. Instead, contact Brittany Salazar and she will make your room available for conference attendees on the waiting list.

Registration Now Open for Collaborating, Innovating, Transforming: 2023 Economic Development Conference for the EDA Denver Region
The NADO Research Foundation, with support from the US Economic Development Administration (EDA) Denver Regional Office, will hold Collaborating, Innovating, Transforming: 2023 Economic Development Conference for the EDA Denver Region, in Denver, Colorado from April 10-12, 2023. The EDA Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, Alejandra Castillo, will provide a keynote address during the conference. The conference is designed for Economic Development Districts (EDDs), University Centers, Tribal Planning Grantees, and other regional development practitioners in the 10-state EDA Denver Region. Click here for the preliminary conference agenda, a link to register to attend, and information about the conference hotel.


EDA Publishes RFI for Regional Tech Hubs Program
The US Economic Development Administration (EDA) published a Request for Information (RFI) to inform the planning and design of the new Regional Technology and Innovation Hub program. Comments due: March 16 at 5:00 p.m. ET.

New! Webinar Recording Available: GRADD’s Hire to Operate (H20) Water Workforce Program
The NADO Research Foundation recently co-hosted a webinar highlighting the Green River Area Development District’s (GRADD) Hire to Operate (H20) program, a collaboration with state and local partners to address the shortage of certified water and wastewater operators in Western Kentucky through a Registered Apprenticeship Program. Click here to access the recording and slides.

Details: While not federally mandated yet, the National Rural Transit Assistance Program (RTAP) is holding a series of three General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) workshops. In July 2022, the Federal Transit Administration  proposed a requirement that a GTFS feed for fixed routes be included in the annual National Transit Database.

One Week Left to Register for “An Afternoon with the Districts” Event
Registration is open until March 1 for the NADO Research Foundation’s “An Afternoon with the Districts” event following NADO’s Washington Policy Conference. Please join us on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 from 12 to 5 p.m. ET at the Crystal City Marriott (the conference hotel) for an afternoon of training, networking, and sharing best practices among EDDs and other key partners. Inspired by previous years’ successful “An Afternoon with the CEDS” meetings, this event is delivered as part of the EDA-funded Economic Development District Community of Practice that was launched in late 2022. The NADO Research Foundation and Argonne National Laboratory recently hosted a webinar demonstrating how the National Economic Resilience Data Explorer (NERDE) and the Economic Development Capacity Index (EDCI) tools can be utilized to support your CEDS and other regional planning efforts. DOE Notice of Funding Opportunity for Rural or Remote Areas 
The US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) intends to issue a funding opportunity in March 2023 for up to $300 million to improve the cost, reliability, environmental impact, and climate resilience of energy systems in rural or remote areas across the country. Learn more about this anticipated funding opportunity announcement (FOA) here.

DOT Opens Port, Transit, and Other Funding Opportunities
A number of FY2023 grant programs and funding opportunities geared toward rural transportation practitioners are currently accepting applicants. These programs include modernizing port infrastructure (MARAD), training in operating commercial vehicles (FMCSA), funding buses and bus facilities (FTA), funding low-emission buses and bus facilities (FTA). Further information is available on grants for Areas of Persistent Poverty (AoPP) and the RAISE Grants. The AIEI Releases an Investment Playbook for Rural Areas
The Appalachian Investment Ecosystem Initiative (AIEI) released a resource playbook on investments and economic development opportunities in rural areas. The playbook focuses on Appalachia, but is applicable to any region. 

HUD Releases Community Compass Webpage Featuring NOFOs
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released the Community Compass webpage which includes resources on technical assistance, capacity building, and HUD projects. This resource also highlights Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFO) for HUD programs. Applications are due by March 28.

DOT Launches Roadway Safety Call to Action
Last week, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) initiated its National Roadway Safety Strategy Call to Action campaign, asking stakeholders to commit to specific actions in 2023 to reduce serious injuries and deaths on our roadways. Roadway fatalities steadily decreased for decades, but then surged during the pandemic in 2020 and have remained high, with nearly 43,000 people killed in 2021. Last year, DOT adopted its National Roadway Safety Strategy, working toward a goal of zero fatalities using the Safe System Approach (SSA).

New! Updated NADO Advocacy Resources
Updated advocacy handouts and resources are now available on the NADO website. These resources can be used to help support meetings with your members of Congress and their staff. During the 2023 NADO & DDAA Washington Conference, NADO members are encouraged to schedule meetings on Capitol Hill with your Senators and Representatives. The recommended day to schedule your meetings is Tuesday, March 14 between 10:30 am-5:00 pm ET. Access the resources here as you prepare for your meetings. If you need help securing contact information for Hill staffers and schedulers, please contact Jamie McCormick (jmccormick@nado.org).
