Senate HELP Committee to Take Up Older Americans Act

Posted on: September 27th, 2013 by NADO Admin

On October 2, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) will take up the reauthorization of the bipartisan Older Americans Act of 2013 (OAA). Current authorization of OAA programs expired in 2011, but programs continue to be funded through the yearly appropriations process. The bill reauthorizes the OAA of 1965 (P.L. 89-73) (http://www NULL.house NULL.gov/legcoun/Comps/OAA65 NULL.pdf) programs through FY2018. The bill also includes reauthorization of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) program.Additionally, the bill takes steps to streamline federal level administration of programs, promote the efficient and effective use of transportation services, and improve coordination between programs at the federal, state, and local levels. NADO applauds the committee’s bipartisan efforts and appreciate provisions in the bill that support AAA funding and program flexibility at the local and regional levels. The House Committee on Education and Workforce, which has jurisdiction over the OAA, has yet to bring up a reauthorizing bill.
