Senate Advances Workforce Reauthorization Legislation

Posted on: June 27th, 2014 by NADO Admin

On June 25, the Senate advanced by a vote of 95 to 3 the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), H.R. 803 as amended.  During consideration of the bill, the Senate rejected by a vote of 33 to 66 an amendment offered by Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) that would have allowed governors to sanction Local Workforce Investment Boards (LWIBs) after one year of poor performance.  NADO was strongly opposed to this amendment and thanks members for contacting their senators to urge opposition.

Last month, a bipartisan, bicameral group of lawmakers announced an agreement to reauthorize the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (P.L. 105-220), which expired in 2003.  WIOA reauthorizes federal workforce and training programs and sets recommended appropriations through fiscal year (FY) 2020.  NADO thanks the Senate for taking action on this critical piece of legislation.

WIOA now moves to the House for consideration.  The bill could come up for a vote when the House returns from the Fourth of July Recess.  NADO legislative staff will continue to monitor this legislation as it moves through the House.
