On Thursday, NADO joined the Campaign for a Renewed Rural Development (CRRD) to express support for a robust Rural Development Title in this year’s farm bill reauthorization. CRRD sent a letter to key congressional members outlining key Rural Development priorities of rural communities. Provisions cited in the letter include:
- Reinstatement of the Undersecretary for Rural Development
- Creation of the Rural Investment Stronger Economy (RISE) program to promote job accelerator partnerships with private industry and institutions of higher education
- Adoption of provision expanding broadband loan program eligibility to include “middle mile” projects
- Expansion of the Strategic Economic and Community Development program to apply to all programs under Rural Development
Both chambers have approved their respective farm bill legislation. A conference committee has been formed to reconcile differences between House and Senate versions. The committee will convene in September following the August recess. Congress has until September 30 to pass new legislation or provide an extension to the current farm bill.
