On June 20, the U.S. House defeated its version of the Farm Bill (H.R. 1947) by a vote of 195-234. The bill failed over continued divisions over food stamp cuts and the future of agriculture subsidies. 62 Republicans voted against the bill and over 103 amendments were considered as part of the final bill.
It remains unclear if Congress has a path forward to getting a five-year Farm Bill passed this year. The 2008 Farm Bill has been extended until September 30, 2013. Currently, it is looking more likely that Congress will pass another Farm Bill extension or be negotiated with the Senate-passed Farm Bill in a potential Omnibus spending bill this fall.
