Overview

Dear NADO and DDAA Washington Conference attendees:

After careful consideration and discussions with NADO’s Executive Committee, DDAA officers, and our federal partners, a decision has been made to cancel the 2020 NADO-DDAA Conference that was scheduled to take place from March 15-18, 2020 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.

The health and safety of all attendees, staff, exhibitors, presenters, and their families are our highest priority. By holding the conference, we could not only put attendees at risk, but we may also risk displacing many of you - trusted community leaders - during a public health crisis for your regions.

Our decision to cancel this event was not taken lightly. We have been closely monitoring updates and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as state and local governments. Numerous states have declared a State of Emergency, with many implementing travel restrictions for nonessential travel. These restrictions directly impact many of our attendees and scheduled speakers. As of this morning, we were experiencing a cancellation rate approaching 40%.

The work that each of you do is so vitally important to regional economies and quality of life. Now, more than ever, you need to be healthy and ready to step into your natural role of leading resiliency efforts and providing strategic support to the economic fabric of your regions once this virus begins to fade.

In addition, some of our most important federal partners – including the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration and the Appalachian Regional Commission – made recent decisions to decline to participate in the conference, independent of NADO and DDAA’s decision, due to concerns for the health of their staff, leadership, and conference attendees. Had we proceeded forward, the lack of participation from these partners would have significantly reduced the quality and scope of the conference content we had planned to provide.

We know you have questions regarding refunds and possible rescheduling; as we finalize details, we will share that information soon. While we can’t replace this conference, we will explore ways in which we might be able to deliver some of the planned content to you in various methods throughout the year. Later today, we will be issuing a blanket cancellation of all rooms at the Marriott. Should you choose not to have your reservation cancelled, please contact Vicki Glass today at [email protected] to hold your room.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this decision has caused, but we also feel strongly that it was the right choice to make given the rapidly evolving circumstances around this public health crisis. Thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Joe McKinney
NADO Executive Director

DDAA Executive Director
