Building Back Better: Communities Come to Life after Disasters

Posted on: September 9th, 2013 by Alexandria Murnan

This session occurred on August 27, 2013 at the Annual Training Conference in San Francisco, CA.

Natural disasters, though they pose many challenges, can also present opportunities to rebuild in ways that enhance quality of life, energize the economy, and protect and capitalize on assets such as main streets, historic buildings, and agricultural lands. This session highlighted two regions that are redeveloping better and stronger after disasters. Speakers shared success stories, challenges, and lessons learned related to public engagement and visioning, leveraging federal and other funding to achieve local needs, and redesigning neighborhoods and communities to increase resilience.

  • Allison Beasley, Planning Director, Southern Mississippi PDD
  • Kevin Belanger, Executive Director, South Central PDC
