NADO’s 2012 Innovation Awards recognized 64 projects from 22 states for their creative approaches to regional community and economic development, including the project described below. Click here for the full list of winners.

The City of Silex, Missouri is located in a floodplain that has experienced repeated flood losses, including a major impact by flash flooding in 2008. After this event, the Boonslick Regional Planning Commission (BRPC) helped create a vision for a community that was not susceptible to repetitive flooding. The City of Silex Community Relocation Project achieved this vision by relocating 73 residential properties to a new town site approximately one mile from the previous floodplain. Additional new
construction, including the necessary infrastructure and 52 new homes in the community, added to the project’s impact on the local economy. BRPC assisted the city by seeking and administering grant funds to offset the costs of the project and coordinating the individual needs and community relocation activities.
