Tools For Entrepreneurship
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is sponsoring a three-day conference, Tools for Entrepreneurship: Building New Economies in Rural America, on the critical importance of entrepreneurship in creating more and better jobs in rural America, September 17-19 in Batavia, Ohio. The conference will examine best practices in the field of rural entrepreneurship, the impact of ARC’s Entrepreneurship Initiative in Appalachia and application of these strategies to rural communities throughout the US.

Thriving Hometowns Network
The National Center for Small Communities (NCSC) is looking for submissions for a new Thriving Hometowns Network database of 50 small town economic development case studies, drawn from communities of less than 10,000 population, in a searchable electronic format. The database will become part of Harvesting Hometown Jobs Online, a comprehensive electronic resource located on their website (www.natat.org/ncsc).

Local Clean Air Innovations
The National Association of Local Government Environmental Professionals (NALGEP) has released a new report, Profiles of Local Clean Air Innovation: Empowering Communities to Meet the Air Quality Challenges of the 21st Century, that communicates the views of local government officials on new approaches and partnerships to improve air quality. The report showcases 20 examples of community-based practices in smart growth, clean energy, pollution prevention, transportation choice, regional cooperation, and public outreach and 10 actions for promoting community-based air innovation.

Mediating Land Use Disputes
Based on the results of a national study involving 100 American communities that used assisted negotiation to resolve local land use disputes, Mediating Land Use Disputes: Pros and Cons, by Lawrence Susskind, Mieke van der Wansem and Armand Ciccarelli examines the pros and cons of pursuing such processes in an increasingly complex political environment.

Older Americans 2000
Older Americans 2000: Key Indicators of Well-Being covers 31 key indicators carefully selected by the Federal Interagency Forum on Aging Related Statistics to portray aspects of the lives of older Americans and their families. The report is divided into five subject areas: population, economics, health status, health risks and behaviors, and health care.
