Superfund Site Redevelopments
Now available on CD ROM is the Environmental Protection
Agency’s Reusing Superfund Sites. The CD profiles pilots
that have received EPA funding for redevelopment of
de-listed sites. Also, included are highlights on how the
EPA brownfields program and underground storage tank
removal programs can be used in conjunction with the
superfund redevelopment initiative. A portfolio of pilot
photos compliments the site profiles.

Mitigation Planning
Developing the Mitigation Plan: Identifying Mitigation
Actions and Implementation Strategies is the latest
release in a series of guides for state and local
mitigation planning by the US Department of Homeland
Security FEMA. The guide offers step by step instructions
for the community self-assessments, plan modeling and plan
implementation applicable to natural and man-made
disasters, e.g. hurricanes and chemical spills.

Rural Challenges Examined
The National Council of State Legislatures’ Rural
Development Task Force looks at the particular concerns
rural communities have regarding economic development,
education, telecommunications and other matters in Meeting
the Challenges of Rural America. The study profiles rural
development projects in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and
Texas, and offers 10 principles for beneficial development
of rural areas.

Fast Track Broadband
Dr. Stephen Pociask and the Economic Policy Institute’s
Putting Broadband on High Speed: New Public Policies to
Encourage Rapid Deployment discusses the underlying
economic and regulatory framework for local communications
and information technology industries, which has lost more
than 500,000 jobs in the past two years. The report
findings reveal that 1.2 million new jobs would be created
by full deployment of broadband networks.

Retirement Development: A How to Guide by the Center for
Economic Development at Jacksonville State University in
Alabama explains the steps and elements that communities
must possess to be a retirement migration destination.
