2005 Base Realignment and Closure Round

BRAC Fiscal 2008 Budget Proposal

February 12 -- Within the Department of Defense, $8.1 billion is requested for the Pentagon to execute the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. As part of a year-long funding resolution (H J Res 20), fiscal 2007 spending for BRAC was set at $2.5 billion, $1 billion more than the fiscal 2006 level. The administration's request also includes $60 million for the Pentagon's Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) to provide planning and redevelopment to local communities and governments impacted by the BRAC process, $30 million less than current funding.

BRAC Commission Votes on Closures

September 12 -- On August 27, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) finished voting on a Pentagon proposal to consolidate hundreds of military bases. The commission rejected some of the Pentagon's recommendations, approved many others and added shutdowns of its own.

Three of the most prominent bases spared closure by the Commission include Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico and the Portsmouth Shipyard in Maine.

President Bush has already said he will sign off on the recommendations, which he must do by September 23.

According to the Pentagon, the closings and realignments would result in a net savings of about $49 billion over 20 years. Once the closure and realignment process begins to move forward, it is anticipated to take place over six years, starting next year.
